Sediment filtration aims to capture dirt and suspended particles. It can be installed at the cistern inlet or after the pump, depending on flow, pressure and maintenance access. The location determines which parts of the system it protects.
No single sock filter or micron rating suits every pipa delivery in Cabo. Selection needs to account for the filling connection and actual flow.
What a sediment filter does
Depending on its rating and configuration, a filter can retain sand, silt, rust particles and other suspended material. This can reduce accumulation and loading on later cartridges.
An ordinary sediment filter does not remove dissolved hardness, replace disinfection or establish drinking-water safety. NSF recommends checking the specific certified reduction claims for the product; certification does not cover every contaminant. Our treatment guide explains the different technologies.
Where to put sediment protection
At the cistern inlet
A basket, screen or filter bag can be useful if it has enough area to handle the delivery without backing up or overflowing. The connection, access and ability to remove captured material are part of the design.
After the pump
A washable screen or cartridge housing on the pressurized line may be easier to isolate and service. It protects downstream piping and treatment, although it does not prevent material from collecting inside the cistern.
In two stages
With substantial particle loading, a coarse washable stage followed by a finer cartridge may be appropriate. The sequence depends on observations and equipment requirements; there is no universal sequence for Cabo.
Size for the delivery flow
A small filter can restrict a high-flow delivery. Evaluate filter area and micron rating, loading during the fill, hose diameter, delivery rate, available pressure, fill-point geometry and overflow handling together.
A filter suitable for one property can cause filling problems at another. Review these factors before installation.
Make the decision for your property
For pipa deliveries: document the filling point and flow. If inlet filtration cannot practically handle the delivery, evaluate filtration after the pump.
For a low-flow municipal connection: an inlet housing may be an option if it is sized for the connection.
For existing tank deposits: a new filter will not remove them. Pair prevention with a cleaning assessment when appropriate.
For rapidly clogging cartridges: record what they capture and review the first stage. Installing increasingly fine cartridges will not necessarily resolve an undersized first stage.
Plan access and servicing
The installation should allow the required flow and remain accessible. Consider isolation valves, bypass where appropriate and gauges before and after a pressurized cartridge stage.
Pressure difference can help determine when a cartridge needs service. Follow manufacturer requirements and actual operating conditions as well as the calendar.
What a dirty filter tells you
It shows that material was captured. Color alone does not identify minerals, microorganisms, water safety or the delivery source.
Record dates, duration of use, known deliveries and photographs. Add water tests when a specific question needs an answer.
Sediment, hardness and carbon serve different purposes
Sediment is suspended material. Hardness concerns dissolved calcium and magnesium that pass through ordinary sediment filters.
Carbon is selected for taste, odor, chlorine or other substances addressed by the particular product. Its location needs to be considered as part of the system. The CDC notes that whole-home removal of disinfectant can allow more germs to grow in plumbing.
Compare actual costs and results
Include equipment, installation, consumables and maintenance in the cost comparison. Economic results depend on actual particle loading and the equipment being protected.
Compare a current quotation with the installation’s service record. That lets you review what changed after filtration was added and what it costs to maintain.
Frequently asked questions
Can a filter slow a delivery? Yes. The effect depends on filter area, rating, loading and flow. Size it for the actual delivery.
Which micron rating should I choose? There is no single figure for every property. Evaluate observed material, flow and downstream equipment requirements.
Will it reduce TDS or hardness? Ordinary sediment filtration captures suspended particles, not dissolved ions.
Will I still need tank cleaning? A filter does not remove deposits already in the tank. Cleaning and prevention address different parts of the system.
