What this test measures
This DPD kit checks free chlorine residual in a water sample. Chlorine is used up over time, so recording readings can help you observe changes between deliveries and during storage. The CDC explains how chlorine and chloramine disinfection works.
A chlorine reading alone does not establish drinking-water safety: this test does not replace microbiological testing or identify every chemical contaminant. Ask a drinking-water laboratory or local health authority which tests fit your situation. The EPA’s water-testing guidance explains why different contaminants require different tests.
Keep a useful record
Follow the instructions supplied with your kit for sampling, adding reagent and reading the result at the correct time. Record the date, time, sample location and result. Keep delivery and cistern-maintenance records with your readings so you can review changes with your service provider.
Do not use a single reading to set a chlorine dose or decide that water is safe to drink. If you need to investigate a problem, see our guide to testing your water.
Confirm the kit before ordering
The listed range and reagent count describe a reference configuration. Your quote will confirm the model, measurement range, test count and package contents. Always use the manufacturer’s measurement instructions for the exact model supplied.
